Tip for Tuesday: Should My Child Know How To Work OnStar?

You have probably wondered, "Should I teach them about those mysterious life saving buttons." The answer, yes. Yes. Yes. YES!! On more than one occasion; children have reached out to OnStar when their parents became incapacitated or were unable to call themselves.

When her mother suffered a sudden diabetic attack and began driving on the wrong side of the road, quick-thinking 7-year-old Kerry MacLean pushed the red OnStar1 emergency button and asked for help.

Like 911, your child should be taught to utilize OnStar in the event of an emergency or only when prompted to do so. Check out this downloadable PDF!
What should you tell them?
The red button (with either a cross or sos on it) is just like dialing 911. If there is an emergency, they can just push this button to call for help.
An OnStar Advisor can automatically call the car in the event of a collision. Do not be afraid they are only trying to help, and will notify 9-1-1 of your emergency!
Tell your kids to ask the advisor to remain on the line until help arrives.
It is ok to tell an advisor your location. They are asking so they can send the help you will need in the event of an accident.
While many fear the technology dependence we are seeing in society; in this situation, it could be the difference between life and death.
